The summer solstice is the day of the year with the longest time of daylight. It marks the start of summer. In 2011, it occurred on Tuesday, June 11. We were not holding a retreat on that day, but there were enough of our resident and extended communities here to have a ceremony. We made a sun banner, about two feet square,
we built a bonfire;
and we burned the banner in a ceremony with dancing and drumming.
The wind took the embers of the banner up into the night sky.
This year Solstice will be next Monday, and we will be hosting an outside group. We may not have anything special on the first day of summer, but we are gearing up for our best summer ever. Already there are 153 names on our rosters for summer events - so if you're planning to be with us this summer, and haven't reserved your place, do it now.
