DEATH SALON
A Weekend for Mortals and Those Who Love Them

Facilitated by Dave Nimmons
Friday, October 29 - Sunday, October 31, 2010

A weekend on DEATH? Isn’t that kind of… creepy? Not on your life!

Death is the last great chapter in our human story: utterly universal, yet profoundly personal, as inevitable and it is intimate. Yet in our culture, the topic remains largely shrouded in uneasy silence. We call it “morbid,” euphemize it, hide it from view, relegate it to the experts, and vaguely hope it won’t really happen to us. Yet, as our mortality circles ever nearer, we are left pondering it individually, feeling at best uneasy, at worst distressed.

Until now.

The Death Salon breaks new ground. In this unique setting, we lift the veil on this most profound human experience, personally and collectively. Come, explore Death’s deep precincts in lively company. We provide the chance to meet and map mortality –its meanings in mind and body, symbol, spirit and faith – as a door to our soul’s deep meaning and power.

The Death Salon is unlike any retreat you’ve ever done. It offers a deep, positive, proactive and provocative exploration of the cultural and personal issues, legal and medical facts, bodily experience, and philosophical and spiritual values around death. You’ll enjoy performance, discussion, activity, rite and ritual, celebration, meditation, reflection, writing, laughter, and action. All in an atmosphere of supportive fellowship.

Among our topics:

  • Mortality: A Meet and Greet What we imagine—or don’t —about death
  • Fact, Fear, and Faith: What happens when we die? Where—if anyplace—do we go?
  • Pinking the Black: Gay men’s special tribal wisdom about death
  • My Best Death: What makes a humane passage & how can we improve our (and others’) odds?
  • Planning Passage: How to view, imagine, approach, prepare, and conduct a proper passing.
  • Take Back the Night: Unplugging the Mortality Machine to Get the Death You Want
  • Put the FUN back in Funeral: Revels to Remember our Lives and Loves
  • Dying Words: Obituaries, Vivuaries, and voices from the dead
  • Making Love to Morticia: The embrace of mortality as a path to vitality

Calling all souls. Those who seek a truly unique experience for next Halloween, join this transcendent journey as we shine a whole new light on our oldest companion.

Really, to be anywhere else would be…just plain creepy!
