Quiet Mind, Open Heart: Exploring Silence and Meditation

Steve Schwartzberg describes his retreat, "Quiet Mind, Open Heart,"

Quiet Mind, OpenHeart" is a unique, intimate weekend of communal silence and meditation practice with gay men. This gentle workshop is a time to unplug from the busyness of life, slow down, and explore the ancient Buddhist practice of sati ( compassionate, mindful awareness). During our time together we share meals, attune our hearts and minds to the natural beauty around us, and practice sitting and walking meditation, all in the soft cocoon of communal silence. Participants are free to engage in any silent contemplative practice they wish.  Instruction will be offered in two basic styles of Buddhist meditation; concentration (shamata) and loving-kindness (metta). During the retreat Steve will offer group instruction, one-on-one consultations, and a daily “dharma” talk relating to meditation, silence, and spirituality.

The retreat is open to beginners and experienced meditators alike.  No prior experience is necessary. For men who have never meditated before, but have been curious about it, this is an excellent introduction. The workshop is in depth, but in a gentle, supportive environment.  It's a rare opportunity to practice meditation and silence with other gay men. As our lives and culture speed up, with technology and news constantly bombarding us, the ability to discover a quiet place within is a useful skill in maintaining mental health and emotional equilibrium.
