Kathryn Wedderburn

Kathryn Wedderburn has been calling contra dances at Easton Mountain for so long, even longtime resident staff members can’t remember when she started! She started calling contras in general over thirty-five years ago. She began teaching basic swing dance lessons a few years after she started calling. She’s performed at such prestigious folk festivals as: The Dance Flurry, Old Songs Festival, Falcon Ridge Festival, and the Downeast Festival. She’s the only swing dance instructor for Falcon Ridge. Her love of dance also led her to study West Coast Swing, Cajun and Zydeco, Tango, and a little ballroom style dancing. Kathryn is known for teaching genderless dancing and for helping beginners feel comfortable.

In her “spare time,” she took up art quilting about six years ago. She studied with a fabulous artist, Elizabeth Iola Sylvan. The unique style, almost an inverse of traditional quilting, has enabled her to turn out fanciful, colorful wall hangings that have been well-received. She’s held two exhibits in the past three years and sold several pieces, some on commission.

If you had told her 40 years ago that she would ever make money with dancing and sewing, she would have patted your hand saying, “Well, bless your heart.” While trying to not roll her eyes so hard that it hurt.
